Zoe, a sometime artist, is from California. Martin, an engineer, is from Yorkshire. Both have ended up in a picturesque Cluny, in central France. Both are struggling to come to terms with their recent past -for Zoe, the death of his husband and for Martin, a messy divorce-.

Looking to make a new start, each sets out alone to walk 2.000 kilometres from Cluny to Santiago, in northwestern Spain, in the footsteps of pilgrims who have walked the Camino - the Way- for centuries.

On -let's face it - a date" / (Martin): "I felt I'd managed to invite Zoe to dinner without giving the impression of it being a date".

"Why am I walking? I asked myself, but no answer came. I got another glass of rosé".

I just finished the book and I enjoyed it very much, like the previous The Rosie Project, The Rosie Effect and The Best of Adam Sharp from Graeme Simsion. Funny reading (loved the brainy sense of humor that both authors share), romantic story and addictive argument, with sudden shifts in the narration that keep you totally gripped. Emotionally very intense and an epic ending guaranteed, one of those holding back tears. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the characters in the big screen; not only Zoe and Martin, but also Camille, Julia or Sarah and specially all the pilgrims they meet along the way, like Monsieur Chevalier, the Brazilians, the Spanish group, Madame Chaud Lapin, Todd or Bernhard and his father.

Los 39 escalones - Eixample Teatre - Barcelona

Anoche fui a ver Los 39 Escalones, obra de teatro que está ahora en cartelera en el Eixample Teatre de Barcelona. La obra se basa en una novela de aventuras escrita en 1915 por el barón John Buchan (The 39 Steps), quien además de novelista fue político del partido unionista de Escocia y sirvió como Gobernador General de Canadá.

De la novela se han hecho varias adaptaciones cinematográficas pero quizás la más conocida es la que se realizó en 1935 bajo la dirección de Alfred Hitchcock. En el año 2005 se estrenó en el West End, la zona de teatros de Londres, esta adaptación a comedia teatral de Patrick Barlow, que fue premiada en los Tony Awards de Broadway y los Premios Olivier (los premios más prestigiosos de teatro en EEUU e Inglaterra respectivamente). Los 39 escalones es una de las comedias más representadas en todo el mundo y ahora ha vuelto a Barcelona: una comedia, cuatro actores y más de 100 personajes en una hora y media de espectáculo trepidante y divertido.

Lo que más me gustó de la obra es que es una historia de intriga que, teniendo una trama que sucede en distintos puntos geográficos y tiene tantos personajes, se traslada con mucha creatividad y humor a un pequeño escenario al que sólo se suben cuatro actores y en el que unos cuantos objetos multiplican constantemente sus usos.Y estando adaptada de esa manera tan ingeniosa, además consigue mantener la intriga.

Me encanta detectar conexiones y mensajes que no son explícitos, que están ahí pero no se nos explican directamente, como cuando analizas datos y extraes pistas e información reveladora e inesperada. Así que también me llevé una grata sorpresa al descubrir que la obra está repleta de guiños, lo que me arrancó unas cuantas sonrisas. Guiños como la aparición en escena de unos inspectores de policía que evocaban al inspector Colombo, porque iban vestidos con la misma gabardina y se movían y hablaban igual, con esa característica voz afónica. O el homenaje a otra de las películas de Hitchcock, Con la muerte en los talones, cuando uno de los personajes que persigue al protagonista le grita en la persecución "parece que está usted con la muerte en los talones". Esa película del director también estaba llena de detalles, es una de sus obras más conocidas y un referente del cine de suspense, con el clásico argumento de un personaje central que es un falso culpable, un hombre corriente confundido a veces por un asesino (Los 39 escalones) y otras veces con un agente secreto (Con la muerte en los talones).

Viendo la obra sientes que hay conexiones constantes, que están ahí, y que hay tantas, que a lo mejor alguna no lo sea en realidad. Como cuando me pareció percibir una tierna dedicatoria a Martes y Trece, evocando el gag de Encarna y las empanadillas que tanto nos ha hecho y nos hace reír aunque pasen los años. Ese guiño a Josema Yuste y Millán Salcedo, ¿estaba ahí o no? Curiosiodad: uno de los actores en la obra que protagonizan ese momento es Rubén Yuste, que casualmente comparte apellido con uno de los actores de Martes y Trece. Me pregunto si de verdad hubo allí un guiño o fueron sólo visiones mías. No lo sé, lo que sí sé es que en función de lo cinéfilos que seamos captaremos todos esos guiños en mayor o menor medida.

Las entradas para esta obra están numeradas y se pueden comprar aquí. Me costó 14€ por persona. Hay sesiones a las 18:30h y a las 20:30h. El espectáculo dura una hora y media, sin interrupciones y estará en cartelera hasta el 23 de febrero de 2019.
